MS Rx Pharmacy Coming to MSCA This Summer
MS patients soon will be able to see their MSCA physicians and have their prescriptions filled in one place.
MSRx, a dedicated specialty pharmacy for patients of the Multiple Sclerosis Center of Atlanta, will open July 1, 2014, just across the hall from the Center’s fourth-floor administrative offices in The Palisades Building at 3200 Downwood Circle.
The pharmacy is the result of a partnership between the MSCA and Specialty Rx Endeavors, an independent specialty pharmacy focusing on patient care for individuals with chronic diseases.
According to Maney Mazloom, PharmD, Senior Vice President and Director of Clinical Services for Specialty Rx Endeavors, and MSCA CEO Terry Smith, MS Rx will allow patients greater access and improved overall care.
“The pharmacy will be conveniently located below the clinic and will specialize in the management of MSCA patients,” Mazloom says. “Our mission is to provide improved access and affordability for MSCA patients to the medications that they need.”
“Therapies for MS are usually tied around a disease-modifying drug,” Smith says. “We currently may see a patient every three months or year and not know if he or she is taking the medications prescribed. Through MS Rx, pharmacists will be very active in patient care. Patients can come down one floor and meet with the pharmacist about drug specifications.”
Smith says this kind of on-site attention will exceed what is possible at typical pharmacies. “A pharmacy that handles everything from colds to corns to MS drugs may not have that focused familiarity with the drugs we use to treat MS,” he says.
MS Rx also will help the insurance preauthorization process go more smoothly for patients. “MS Rx will do the preauthorization and make sure all is handled in a way that is best for the patient, even if the medication has to be filled through another specialty pharmacy to meet insurance requirements,” Smith says.
The partnership between Specialty Rx Endeavors and MSCA developed over the past two years. One of the principles of Specialty Rx Endeavors has a family member suffering from MS and receiving treatment at MSCA. Through this personal relationship with the Center and the MS community, Mazloom says, both Specialty Rx Endeavors and the MSCA saw an opportunity to provide a new type of optimal care model for patients requiring specialty medications for the management and treatment of MS.
